The labial-coronal effect and CVCV stability during reiterant speech production: an acoustic analysis

چکیده
This study investigates the stability of LC (Labial-Coronal) and CL (Coronal-Labial) CVCV sequences during a repetition task at an increasing rate. Despite variability between subjects and differences linked to the various consonant manners of articulation used in the study, the results show that the LC pattern is more stable than the CL pattern. Indeed, under the rate pressure, CL sequences often evolved to LC ones (e.g. /sapa/ switched to /pasa/) whereas the reverse pattern almost never happened. Coupled with previous studies about world languages, speech development and verbal transformation experiments, this is interpreted as a possible influence of the substance on phonological forms.

The Labial-Coronal effect a during reiterant speech production
In a companion paper [1], we showed that CVCV utterances with a labial consonant followed by a coronal one (LC sequences) are more stable than reverse CL sequences in speeded reiterant speech. We proposed that this could explain why human languages select LC sequences more often than CL ones (the “LC effect”). We provide here articulatory data explaining where the greater LC stability could com...
متن کاملA perceptual correlate of the labial-coronal effect.
PURPOSE Statistical studies conducted in various languages on both infants and adults have revealed an intersyllabic preference for initiating words with a labial consonant-vowel-coronal consonant sequence. Speech motor constraints have been proposed to explain this so-called labial-coronal effect. This study was designed to test for a possible perceptual correlate of the labial-coronal effect ...
متن کاملAn articulatory basis for the labial-to-coronal effect: ÕpataÕ seems a more stable articulatory pattern than ÕtapaÕ
This paper investigates the coordination between the jaw, the tongue tip, and the lower lip during repetition with rate increase of labial-to-coronal LaCo consonant-vowel-consonant-vowel disyllables e.g., /pata/ and coronal-to-labial CoLa ones e.g., /tapa/ by French speakers. For the two types of disyllables: 1 the speeding process induces a shift from two jaw cycles per disyllable to a single ...
متن کاملPlace assimilation across words in running speech: corpus analysis and perception.
Place assimilation can lead to neutralization of segmental contrasts. It is controversial, however, to what extent such neutralizations actually happen in natural speech. This study examines: (i) the degree to which regressive place assimilations occur in word final consonants in conversational German, and (ii) whether these assimilations are perceived as neutralized by listeners. The productio...
متن کاملA critical evaluation of gestural stiffness estimations in speech production based on a linear second-order model.
PURPOSE Linear second-order models have often been used to investigate properties of speech production. However, these models are inaccurate approximations of the speech apparatus. This study aims at assessing how reliably stiffness can be estimated from kinematics with these models. METHOD Articulatory movements were collected for 9 speakers of German during the production of reiterant CVCV ...
